Building trust in teams comes through true connection with everyone who is on the team. We know that the best teams flourish when trust and connection has been established and is maintained, or even strengthened.
Having spent some time watching Brene Brown’s TED talk on the Power of Vulnerability and slowly making my way through her book Dare to Lead, it is even more clear that to build complete trust in a team, it’s members need to be vulnerable.
This is not easy to do because it requires people to open up and be courageous in sharing their vulnerability. So, where do we start?
A little while back, I wrote a post about the value of having a ‘Check-in’ at the beginning of team meetings. Through establishing some protocols for the check-in, it is possible to begin to tease out people’s vulnerability. These protocols can begin with low stakes items such as sharing something that you are finding difficult right now, talking about something you have not achieved yet, or sharing difficult circumstances where there ended up being a silver lining. As people become more comfortable with each other they tend to share more and we get a great sense of those we work with.
Steps like this will make a team feel more connected in their common purpose, strengthen relationships and support through compassionate interaction. What team would not want to have that?
